چکیده

Background Carotid intraplaque haemorrhage (IPH) and lipid rich necrotic core (LRNC) have been associated with accelerated plaque growth, luminal narrowing, future surface disruption and development of symptomatic events. It has also been reported that unstable plaque which contains LRNC or IPH is associated with an increased number of emboli after carotid artery stenting. Therefore, a simple screening method to detect these components in the plaque is needed. Maximum intensity projection (MIP) images from time-of-flight MR angiography (TOF-MRA) are widely and routinely used for screening carotid artery stenosis. This study examined whether high-intensity signal (HIS) in the plaque on MIP images from routine TOF-MRA could quantify IPH.

Quantitative evaluation of high intensity signal on MIP images of carotid atherosclerotic plaques from routine TOF-MRA reveals elevated volumes of intraplaque hemorrhage and lipid rich necrotic core

BACKGROUND Carotid intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) and lipid rich necrotic core (LRNC) have been associated with accelerated plaque growth, luminal narrowing, future surface disruption and development of symptomatic events. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quantitative relationships between high intensity signals (HIS) in the plaque on TOF-MRA and IPH or LRNC volumes as measured by multic...

Presence of intraplaque hemorrhage stimulates progression of carotid atherosclerotic plaques: a high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging study.

BACKGROUND Previous studies suggest that erythrocyte membranes from intraplaque hemorrhage into the necrotic core are a source of free cholesterol and may become a driving force in the progression of atherosclerosis. We have shown that MRI can accurately identify carotid intraplaque hemorrhage and precisely measure plaque volume. We tested the hypothesis that hemorrhage into carotid atheroma st...

Intraplaque high-intensity signal on 3D time-of-flight MR angiography is strongly associated with symptomatic carotid artery stenosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Intraplaque hemorrhage in carotid artery atherosclerotic plaque has been shown to be a marker of risk, associated with prior and future ischemic events, and has been associated with regions of intraplaque high-intensity signal on 3D-TOF MRA. We assessed the association of intraplaque high-intensity signal determined on 3D-TOF MRA with the incidence of prior ipsilateral st...

High-Intensity Signal in Carotid Plaque on Routine 3D-TOF-MRA Is a Risk Factor of Ischemic Stroke.

BACKGROUND Carotid atherosclerotic disease is recognized as an important risk factor for brain ischemic events. However, high-grade stenosis does not always cause ischemic strokes, whereas moderate-grade stenosis may often cause ischemic strokes. It has been reported that there is an association between carotid intraplaque hemorrhage (IPH) and new cerebral ischemic events. The purpose of this s...

Assessment of carotid plaque stability based on the dynamic enhancement pattern in plaque components with multidetector CT angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Recent studies have investigated plaque morphology to determine patients who are at high risk of carotid atherosclerosis. In this study, we investigated whether a difference in dynamic enhancement pattern in plaque components could be useful to assess plaque stability with multidetector CT angiography. METHODS Fifty-nine lesions with moderate to severe carotid atheroscl...
